GRAF5014 - Magazine Layout - INDESIGN


Thumbnails/Dummy as a PDF DUE WEEK 4

(Require 2 Page layout ideas, 3 logo designs concepts & 1 ad design concepts for each of the 3 ads

Objective

You will gain an understanding of how multiple page documents are created and maintained in InDesign.
I'm looking once again for good file structure and proper use of InDesign tools & boxes in the appropriate instance,
plus some creative Image & Typographic use In InDesign.

Magazine Layout

The magazine layout topic will be be totally up to you. This means planning will be key to this project. You will be given elements that will be required in your layout.

Task:

Produce a condensed 12-page magazine layout. Content and topic is up to you. Topics and page thumbnails are due week 4 and are worth 10% of your final mark. Please be as detailed as possible. Download pdf of magazine dummy/thumbnails template. Click Here to Download. You will need to upload the pdf week 4.

Once you have decided on a topic, you will need to research the topic and grab text for that topic from the net, magazines, etc. to place into your layout. Make sure to credit your sources.

The magazine pages will all run as 4 colour and the cover will run as 5 colour
(SPOT COLOUR HIT ON THE COVER - vector logo).

Page content Breakdown

ONE:
This page is the cover. You will need to design a logo for your magazine which is displayed on the cover, as well as an interesting photograph/s which represents the magazines topic. Also include a cover story that you are going to focus on.

TWO:
This page is considered the inside front cover and is usually sold as a full page ad. You will design an ad for a make believe company that you come up with, promoting a product that would run in the magazine you are creating.

THREE:
Contents Page: This page contains information for the readers and is a big part of the overall design. You will need to do some research and come up with a unique page to showcase your magazine. Although you will not be doing a full magazine you must come up with copy to fill the contents page.

FOUR to NINE:
These pages are where the magic happens. You will be treating these pages with a FEATURE and DEPARTMENT


TEN:
this page you will feature yourself as a columnist/editor and write about a topic that pertains to your Magazine. For home work you might want to take a look at some magazines you are interested in.

ELEVEN:
You must create a full-page ad for this page

TWELVE:
You must create a full-page ad for this space as well

In the end this project will feel like a small magazine.


MECHANICAL requirements

> Magazine trim size : 8" X 10"
> CMYK Colour (EXCEPT COVER WHICH IS 5 COLOUR)
> Bleed: 1/8"
> 3 column grid
> Gutter: .2"
> Margins: Top: 0.5" Both Sides: 0.5" Bottom: .65"
> 12 pages: (see Below for page content)
> Facing Pages
> All final images placed into the layout must be flattened cmyk & .tiff,.eps,.psd or .ai files (please also provide layered versions as well)
> Use only 2 layers max in Indesign> 1 for text, one for images.

Ads
> You must create 3 different ads that would most likely be advertising in the magazine topic you choose. (ie. for a home renovation magazine, you might have an ad for HOME DEPOT)
>all are CMYK colour
> All ads will bleed
> Must be created in a separate indesign document.
> Must create a HI-RES pdfx of each ad and the ad must be placed into our magazine files as PDFs. (Use "PDF/X-1a:2001" preset)

CREATIVE requirements

1 - Ads that you design will be placed into the layout as "PRESS QUALITY" PDFX

2 - Depending on the topic of your article, you will create images and/or logos to enhance the look of your magazine layout.

3 - You will use typography to enhance the look of your layout while maintaining an overall style

Required Elements within the layout:

1 - Use of (paragraph & character) style sheets which will contain:

> Feature Head, (main heading of the story)
> Deck( Text under the main heading)
> Sub Head, (Within the body copy)
> Pull Quote/Call Out (In body copy)
> Cutline/Photo Caption (Under photos)
> Photo Credit (Around Photos)
> Side Bar Head (Side bar is a little story within the main story)
> Side Bar Text (Main copy of the side bar)
> Body Copy: MUST BE (serif font you choose) size: 9.5 /Auto Leading controlled by a baseline grid

2 - Correct use of master pages (Automatic page numbering guides etc.)

SUBMISSION

Hardcopy: ON THE DUE DATE

1 set of B&W lasers (PRINTER SPREADS) trimed & Bound for marking

1 set of composite colour lasers (printer spreads)( Backed UP)(Trimmed& bound)

1 disk printout using "Print Window"


Digital: ON THE DUE DATE

> A folder named: your first initial_yourlastname_2

> In this folder you need to have your InDesignCS document, packaged files (fonts & Images), as well as any original files( psd or ai files if created) placed in a working folder. Also create a PDF folder to hold any print pdfs that you create.

> A Separate folder on the disk to contain each of the ads as separate files (the ads should be in a collected form with a"PDF/X-1a:2001" pdf created to place in the magazine )

> A Press Quality PDF of the magazine layout (Reader Spreads)

> A Press Quality PDF of the magazine layout (Printer Spreads)

> The job must be Burned to a Labeled CD-R or DVD-R to hand in. (the cd or DVD must work in H2030 or H2026 lab or it will graded as zero)

> The CD & Printouts must be submitted in a 9"X12" folder or envelope. The envelope should be sealed and should have your name and group on it as well as GRAF5014 & Due Date. Your CD and printouts must be named as well.

Any late submissions will receive a mark of zero.
